Long-term modelling of nitrogen turnover and critical loads in a forested catchment using the INCA model

چکیده

Many forest ecosystems in Central Europe have reached the status of N saturation due to chronically high N deposition. In consequence, the NO3 leaching into groundand surface waters is often substantial. Critical loads have been defined to abate the negative consequences of the NO3 leaching such as soil acidification and nutrient losses. The steady state mass balance method is normally used to calculate critical loads for N deposition in forest ecosystems. However, the steady state mass balance approach is limited because it does not take into account hydrology and the time until the steady state is reached. The aim of this study was to test the suitability of another approach: the dynamic model INCA (Integrated Nitrogen Model for European Catchments). Long-term effects of changing N deposition and critical loads for N were simulated using INCA for the Lehstenbach spruce catchment (Fichtelgebirge, NE Bavaria, Germany) under different hydrological

A nitrogen model for European catchments: INCA, new model structure and equations

A new version of the Integrated Nitrogen in Catchments model (INCA) was developed and tested using flow and streamwater nitrate concentration data collected from the River Kennet during 1998. INCA is a process-based model of the nitrogen cycle in the plant/soil and instream systems. The model simulates the nitrogen export from different land-use types within a river system, and the in-stream ni...

Excess nitrogen leaching and C/N decline in the Tillingbourne catchment, southern England: INCA process modelling for current and historic time series

Measurements of nitrate deposition and streamwater chemistry in the Tillingbourne Catchment, in Southern England, made in 1979-1982 and 1999-2001 show a 216% increase in Nitrogen leaching despite a reduction in N inputs. Both the historical and current data sets have been modelled using the Integrated Nitrogen Model in Catchments (INCA). The process-based model is shown to reproduce the histori...

Identifying Critical Sources and Evaluate the Best Management Practices to Control Nutrient Load of the Dez River Basin Using the SWAT Model

Using the best management strategies (BMPs) is a useful way to control pollutions at the watershed outlets, which, of course, requires spending costs. Prioritizing these strategies (especially in areas with scarce resources) will greatly contribute to the efficiency and adequacy of these methods in terms of reducing pollution and their application in critical areas. In this research, the SWA...

Reduced Models of the Retention of Nitrogen in Catchments

Process-oriented models of the retention of nitrogen in catchments are by necessity rather complex. We introduced several types of ensemble runs that can provide informative summaries of meteorologically normalised model outputs and also clarify the extent to which such outputs are related to various model parameters. Thereafter we employed this technique to examine policy-relevant outputs of t...

Modelling nitrogen dynamics and distributions in the River Tweed, Scotland: an application of the INCA model

The INCA (Integrated Nitrogen in Catchments) model was applied to the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders, a large-scale (4400km2), spatially heterogeneous catchment, draining a wide range of agricultural land-use types, and which contributes approximately 20% of UK river flows to the North Sea. The model was calibrated for the first four years’ data record (1994 to 1997) and tested over the fo...
